Realization: That whole reverse culture-shock thing hasn't much hit me. Instead I feel like I did a few weeks after I got to Denmark, a queasy trapped feeling in my stomach... because it's not a vacation anymore, I'm here to stay for a while.

Awesome thing: Went to a Dave Matthews concert. Yes. Yes, I did. I know, you probably thought it would never happen. That I would continue to whine myself into oblivion about how I can never get to a concert... but this time, our paths crossed. Fate! And tour scheduling. So, I got our tickets from one of the other interns in my program, and I dunno why I thought they'd be decent seats, but the show wasn't sold out so I basically could have bought the tickets myself, the day of the concert, and they wouldn't have been worse. Amanda went with me... we'd been out the night before in Georgetown, spent the night, then intended to go home and shower etc. before the concert but there wasn't time. Luckily we both really needed summer clothes anyway, so we bought shirts and changed before the concert.

The sound quality up in the nosebleed section was awful, as bad as a car radio, and the row behind us was a bunch of obnoxious kids who mocked all the openers. So I decided we should move. I cooked up this ingenious (ha) plan to get us down on the floor... first step: move much closer to the stage. So we wound our way down to the corner of the stands nearest Dave. Then some guys behind us announced a push toward the floor, so we were swept up and ended up against the rail separating the field from the stands. We happened to be right in front of the sign-language lady, so everyone behind us started hissing that we were blocking the deaf people. So we all crammed to the left. Which was amazingly cool, crowd energy and surround-sound plus a good line of sight, until a little old man with a headset shooed us all away, saying we had to find a seat. Some really nice girl and her brother stood on their chairs to make room for more people in their row, and we blissed out to Dave for a while... until some other woman came along making sure the rows had one person to a spot. She came up to me first, and asked "Is this your seat?" I drew a blank and said, "What?" She repeated the question. And I thought about it. Yes, for all intents and purposes, this was my seat. So I said, "Oh! Yes." And she didn't question me. Which was good, because I'd lost my ticket stub. The kid behind me had enough time in my silly delay to slip over the backs of the chairs and move until she left.

The concert was so great... they played Two-Step and everything. *Sigh.*

Mitch: Why do I get the feeling I am being royally screwed, Joe?
Joe: Because you are, Mitch.

How not to get to J. Paul's restaurant near Georgetown University: 1) Stare at the metro map really hard. 2) Ask someone for directions. 2) Listen as he tells you all the various routes possible to get there, and that your directions suck. 3) Listen as he gives you "better" directions via bus. 4) Realize that to follow his directions you need to exit the metro station, forfeiting your fare. 5) Explain this to the station manager, who tells you that bus does not exist. 6) Listen as she gives you "better" directions to Georgetown. 7) Watch your train leave as you are listening. 7) Decide to simply take a cab. 8) Fail to have the number for a cab or the address you are going to. 9) Watch as the station manager, bored out of her mind, helps you dial cab companies who consistently hang up on her. 10) Wait outside for the cab for 20 minutes. 11) Call the number of the restaurant to say you'll be late only to find out it's actually the number for MovieFone. 12) Hail a cab by growling at it in frustration. 13) Show up for dinner one hour late.
