"This is where folk music ate itself up and vomited." -- intro to random song on WLUW 88.7

Update: The roomates and I decided around midnight to go out to a bar. So, we did the logical thing, got on our bikes and rode to Nevin's pub. Well, this didn't go over so well with the Friday-night crowd. Some guy muttered, "Bicycle gang," as we passed... and these guys on a porch shouted, "Bikers! Bikers!" after us.

Update: I was not extremely excited about Halloween this year. Last year probably won't be topped for a while, and maybe that had something to do with it. Last year my roommate Liz wanted us all to dress up as parts of speech --gerunds, specifically-- and the best Halloween parade in the country rolled through our neighborhood in the Village. So this year I wasn't completely psyched up for it. Actually, it's rare that I am, because I can never think of something I want to dress up as. It's pressure. But anyway, last night Eliina bolted into my room and said she was going to this Halloween party dressed as a robot. Somehow we remembered the SNL skit-commercial selling Robot Insurance to old people. You know: "They eat old people's medicine for fuel." Thus Tara and I ended up at the Halloween party of some girl we'd never met, dressed half-heartedly as old people. Tara brought up the point that it's hard to dress as stereotypes now, since we're actually sensitive to that stuff. Dressing up as an age bracket! How clever!

Side note: Some guy came to the party wearing only flip-flops, a cowboy hat and a Depends diaper. It was pretty funny at the time. I ran into him today though (he was fully dressed), and he blushed bright red as soon as he saw me. I guess the real problem with that kind of costume is the day after.

Looking through old, old quotes I wanted to post: "I'm doing a photography assignment and I need a small mirror, possibly like 6 inches in diameter for a photo. If it looks like a good mirror to do some lines of cocaine on, it'll work." -- my dorm listserv

Maybe all the philosophical problems people have wondered about over the years, the meaning of life and what is the self and all of that, are just because right now we're trapped in one body. Think about it. Maybe after we die it all becomes perfectly clear that we're not just individual minds but an entire soul, the soul of the world.

Update: Apparently we've been illegally recycling. A woman came out of the building near the dumpster where we've been throwing our bottles and cans, and she yelled at us because it wasn't our building. Well, our building doesn't have recycling. So now we have to make it a covert operation.

Question: Does "acting mature" just mean that you don't show what you're really thinking?

From Mark in NY: "There is a bell on the UN grounds, donated by Japan, that rings twice a year: once on the first day of spring, and once on the first day of the general assembly meeting period, usually in early September.

Of course, almost prophetically (and you can see where this is going), this year that day was September 11. The bell was scheduled to ring at 9 a.m.

It didn't. It still hasn't. I don't know when it will again."
