Update: Back at school! The trip back went fine (of course). I got super-searched by the airport, so they went through everything I was checking and everything I was carrying on. The security staff seemed to be having a jolly old time though, even at 5 a.m. They joked about my packing ability. Then, when I got my suitcase zipper stuck (I actually think it was their fault), and also ripped a tag off my luggage, one of them told me I wasn't allowed to touch anything else. The people on my flight were very chatty... one was a grad student starting at Northwestern and another griped about always getting searched because he had a nose ring and was in his mid-20s. We shared stories of the security staff's offenses and shortcomings. People were especially annoyed at having to unwrap Christmas presents. My favorite? One woman's friend had brought Christmas cookies, and they made her eat one.... The flight itself was uneventful, except that I ordered tomato juice for the first time.

Update: Chaos, weary on the inside, packing and struggling to get back to school. Taking my first flight since Sept. 11... am I scared? A little... although I'm also chronically paranoid, so maybe nothing will seem different.

"Bless me, you stupid jerk!" -- my sister Christina, when I didn't hear her sneeze

Happy New Year, everyone. ... How did you spend it? I was originally going to be on the couch with my mom, dad and some Bailey's... Luckily Janelle called. We went ice skating with her boyfriend and Caitlin... we were a bit skeptical of Janelle's proposal, especially since it was the first year we could all go to a bar and instead were going to the Amherst Pepsi Center. But it turned out to be fun. Around 11:30, we skipped the ball drop at the Pepsi Center (their ball had about one string of Christmas lights attached to it), and gathered at Caitlin's house for spiked hot chocolate and a good game of Clue (Janelle: "This is hell on earth.") We were all amazed by the lack of attention television was paying to the new year. Even at around 11:50, there was little sign that it was almost 2002. On QVC they were selling drills. On the local news they were showing the Olympic torch. Letterman seemed to be a repeat. Finally Times Square appeared on good ole Fox. We stood up and slowly dropped to the floor along with the ball.

Me: So what do people around here wear for running in the winter?

My sister: You know, a wind breaker jacket, wind pants, a little band around the ears. Unless I'm thinking of the '80s.
