random thought
They always tell you to write what you know... I usually try to write *in order* to know something, work through something. I think better that way... But sometimes, it just doesn't work out.

metablog
Maybe everyone already knows this, but maybe not, so I'll say it anyway: You cannot know, by viewing anyone's weblog, what they meant by it. You can guess. But other people's intentions are ultimately unknowable. You can even ask someone what they meant, and even that may not be accurate. Because maybe they had no specific intention at all, or had intentions that conflicted. Maybe they were just screwing around with a writing style. Maybe they were just venting. Maybe they were constructing what looks like a rambling. Maybe they were trying get a reaction, maybe they knew they'd get a reaction but didn't care. Maybe they were just filling space so their page would be updated today. You know. Like this. Weblogging is just a form of creative expression. It happens to be interactive.

So I'm taking a philosophy class right now. We've been studying Nietzsche recently. (Disclaimer: I am just relaying information here, not saying I agree with it. I am also justifying the potentially cheesy quote below.) One day some kid in our class raised his hand and said, "Nietzsche sounds a lot like Oprah." And everybody laughed, and the professor tried to stop himself from smiling, you could tell. But it's true, he does. Be free, be creative, do what you want to do. ... It's an idea that's become very assimilated into everyday life here. It doesn't sound radical at all, although at the end of the 19th century, it certainly was. But Nietzsche is not like Oprah. And here is why. Nietzsche says it's going to be hard, really hard. He says in order to fulfill your potential and create anything original, you have to completely isolate yourself from society, swear off popular culture and work at it every minute of your life until you die, alone and unrecognized, so future generations will benefit from your creations. Bet you won't see Oprah saying *that*.

reply hazy... try again
My new book on finding and succeeding in my post-war job gave me one good piece of advice: Don't go to fortune tellers. But I ignored it. On my walk home Monday I passed two girls, maybe six years old, shouting at the tops of their lungs: "FORTUNES! FORTUNES! ONLY FIFTY CENTS!!" And I thought that was pretty creative, cuz most kids just sell warm lemonade in dixie cups, so I decided to support them. Some guy was already there trying to get fifty cents from them. He'd given them a dollar, and they didn't understand the concept of making change. "Do you want Chinese money?" one of the angelic-looking girls asked, holding a tiny gold coin up to her eye. "No," he said patiently. "I want two quarters." He turned to me and said, "She doesn't understand." I nodded sympathetically. I asked what his fortune was. "They told me I will die soon," he said.

Finally they gave him the quarters on faith, and it was my turn. The girls had a basket piled high with paper fortune tellers/cootie catchers. I picked a color and a letter and a number, or however that works. Except I picked seven, and there were two sevens. They were puzzled by their mistake for a second. 'Oh whatever," one said, taking charge and choosing one of the flaps labeled seven. She lifted it up. "It says... it says..." I leaned over to look. It said: "You will be the cliet." Hmm. But like all fortune tellers, she possessed the power of interpretation. "You will be the ... the... how bout the coolest. You will be the coolest."

So that's comforting.
