the beat... stops
I interned for an alternative weekly called Buffalo Beat the summer after my freshman year of college. I loved it. The paper covered the basics: city council races, Starbucks-ization and where to find good jazz. Sure, sometimes I acted like a stuck-up Medill brat (a little, and only because they didn't even have a style guide for pete's sake!) But eventually I found out they were pretty cool, and because of them I still want to work at an alternative weekly someday. Unfortunately the paper changed owners/editors after I left, and recently it got bought by its competition and went under. Here's how.

I've been reading the gus since the early days o' the Den, when he was living with a bunch of people in a falling-apart house and begging for a borrowed laptop to take on a roadtrip. Now he's a spiffy computer something-or-other in New York, and he recently went to Iceland. Since I've been too lazy to post about my trip there last year, read about his.

duck and deli story
Walking home from class today, I noticed a guy coming toward me on the sidewalk (a typical college guy: backpack, sweatshirt, walking fast), being followed by a duck (a typical duck: glossy feathers, webbed feet, waddling quickly). It trailed at his heels like a lost puppy, and I tried not to laugh, but it was a duck. Walking down the sidewalk. The guy glanced behind him to see what I thought was funny, but he didn't look low enough, so he missed it. As I passed the duck, it turned around and began to follow *me*. People laughed and commented as we passed them. Yes, me and my duck. We were quite the pair for a block or so, until the duck got distracted by a patch of mud.

Half a block later, I stopped in to the deli for a cookie and told them about the duck. "It better not stop in here," Bob joked. "My brother really likes duck." John nodded and said, "Oh yeah, I'd get out a knife and fork." I looked horrified. "But you wouldn't eat a friend of Lindsay's..." Bob said. Instead of replying, John hurried to the door and looked down the sidewalk in both directions. Luckily the duck was gone.

update
Just got back from a weekend retreat in Wisconsin. I didn't get locked out this time, and I didn't screw up Mass again. But my bedroom was located, very appropriately, directly above the front door which once cruelly denied me entrance. And I did meet some very cool people, once again proving me wrong: Northwestern students (and Catholic ones, at that) *can* be fun. I actually helped organize the retreat, and I'm really glad I did. For some reason the middle of this year, from November to April, seemed like a huge blur where I didn't learn anything or change at all. Going on this retreat made me realize how far I'd come. More in the next megaphone. (Also cool: Patrick had fun, too.
